In short

  • AI can bring together customer-service interactions, ordering history and market information that a rep may not otherwise see. The value lies in adding useful context to their customer knowledge and judgement.
  • Start by understanding how sales, marketing, customer data and content work together. Identify the connections and changes needed within your existing ecosystem, including opportunities to reach customers beyond the field force’s regular visits.
  • Involve representatives early and test tools in real working situations. Prioritise opportunities that provide clear value, address the data and integration requirements, and assess whether adoption translates into better customer conversations and commercial outcomes.

Sales Rep 3.0 is attracting attention, but what does it mean in practice? Following the move from spreadsheets to CRM systems, AI brings an opportunity to connect healthcare sales and marketing more closely. The rep could increasingly become an “orchestrator” of customer engagement, combining personal relationships with insights from across the organisation. Better pre-call preparation, coordinated follow-up and less administration could give representatives more time for relevant customer conversations. Bringing sales and marketing together also creates opportunities to engage customers the field force does not routinely reach. Mike Brotherston and Aldrin Fernandes discuss how AI could augment the rep’s role, why cross-functional collaboration matters, and how organisations can build on existing technology. They explore the importance of good data and tools that representatives actually use, and how businesses of different sizes can choose opportunities that match their priorities, budgets and readiness.
